Xavier’s cheer team wins state championship title

Xavier College Preparatory’s cheer team won the 2016 Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Division 1 state championship on Saturday, Jan. 14. The competition was held at Gilbert High School, according to a press release. The team’s 25 members are coached by Monica Gaspar and Danielle Behrens.

Xavier sophomore is only Arizona finalist for national volleyball accolade

Xavier College Preparatory sophomore Shannon Shields is one of 30 finalists nationwide for the 2016 “National High School Sophomore of the Year” accolade. The only athlete selected from Arizona, Ms. Shields was recently named First Team All-State by the Arizona Interscholastic Association and Second Team All-State by The Arizona Republic, according to a press release. The “National High School Sophomore of the Year” will be announced in early February, the release stated.

Xavier Dads’ Club to host annual golf tournament on March 10

The Xavier College Preparatory Dads’ Club will host its Annual Heather Farr Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, March 10 at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club in Phoenix. Chaired by Xavier parents Wally Hale and Doug Folger, the event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration, pre-tournament activities, and lunch. There will be a shotgun start at 12:00 p.m., and an awards cocktail reception following the tournament, according to a press release.

Xavier coach, ASU alumna wins ‘Player of the Year’ honors for 12th time

Xavier College Preparatory’s Associate Athletic Director and Co-Head Varsity Golf Coach, Tui Selvaratnam, has been named “Player of the Year” by the Arizona Women’s Golf Association for the 12th time in her career. An alumna of Arizona State University, Ms. Selvaratnam last won Player of the Year honors in 2011, according to a press release. She will be honored at a banquet on Jan. 26 at the Moon Valley Country Club.

Xavier’s annual STEAM event for teen girls to be March 10

Xavier College Preparatory will host its ninth annual “Girls Have IT Day!” on Friday, March 10 on Xavier’s campus, 4710 N. Fifth Street in Phoenix. The event will be 1-3 p.m. “Girls Have IT Day!” promotes young women’s involvement in science, technology, engineering, art, and math, according to a press release.

Xavier to implement AP Capstone diploma program

In the fall, Xavier College Preparatory will become one of more than 600 schools worldwide to implement AP Capstone — an innovative diploma program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills requisite for their future college and career success. The program includes a two-course sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research.

Xavier juniors win national computing recognition

Xavier College Preparatory juniors Gillian Vaughn and Skylar Smith have been awarded “Aspirations in Computing” national honorable mention accolades by the National Center for Women and Information Technology. The two students were recognized for their demonstrated interest and achievements in computing, proven leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for post‑secondary education, according to a press release.

Xavier teacher, mentor wins national mock trial award

An Xavier College Preparatory faculty member has been awarded for his leadership in mock trail education and competition. John Cosden has been awarded the 2016 William Hennessy Outstanding Educator Award by Empire Mock Trial, according to a press release. “Watching you interact with your students over the past ten years has been a blessing,” wrote Empire Mock Trial President Justin Matarrese in his congratulatory letter to Mr. Cosden.
