Xavier, Brophy win big at National Youth Arts Awards

Xavier College Preparatory and Brophy College Preparatory captured nine National Youth Arts Awards and 17 additional nominations for their 2014-15 joint productions of “High School Musical,” “The Secret in the Wings,” “Footloose,” and “Our Town.” Xavier seniors Julia Dooley, Madison Kec, Bailey Smith, Tatumn Zale, and May graduates Eliot Nichols and Jamie Tucker, brought home six of the nine awards, according to a press release. The winners will be honored at an awards ceremony at Valley Youth Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.

Xavier shoots lowest nine-hole score in school golf history

Xavier College Preparatory’s golf team broke its own nine-hole record by shooting a 131 in its first match of the season on Aug. 26 at the Phoenix Country Club. The victory over Pinnacle High School was Xavier’s 205th straight win without a loss and brings the team’s overall record to 427 wins and 25 losses since Sister Lynn Winsor, BVM, took over the coaching reins in 1974. Sister Lynn and co-coach Tui Selvaratnam, who have coached the team together for the past ten years, both said that they are “in awe” of what this year’s team accomplished in its first match, according to a press release.

Xavier to present Broadway musical “Mary Poppins”

The Xavier College Preparatoy drama department is pleased to announce that Xavier-Brophy Theatre will present four performances of Mary Poppins, the hit Broadway musical, this fall. Based upon author P.L. Travers’ book series as well as the 1964 Disney film, Mary Poppins is the story of the beloved nanny who introduces the Banks children to many magical, memorable, and musical adventures, according to a press releaes. Performance dates will be Wednesday, Oct. 14, Thursday, Oct. 15, and Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. – and a matinee performance on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m., stated the release.
