Xavier sophomore is only Arizona finalist for national volleyball accolade

Xavier College Preparatory sophomore Shannon Shields is one of 30 finalists nationwide for the 2016 PrepVolleyball.com “National High School Sophomore of the Year” accolade. The only athlete selected from Arizona, Ms. Shields was recently named First Team All-State by the Arizona Interscholastic Association and Second Team All-State by The Arizona Republic, according to a press release. The “National High School Sophomore of the Year” will be announced in early February, the release stated.

Girls volleyball team is victor in first 5 matches

The newly formed intramural volleyball team at Paradise Valley’s Tesseract School is off to a great start with a 5-0 record. This year, Tesseract PE teacher Cady Majarah started a volleyball team for second-fifth grades, according to a press release. Normally in the fall, volleyball is offered to the middle school students at Tesseract.

Lanier named Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year

Xavier College Preparatory has announced that senior Khalia Lanier has been named the 2015-16 Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year by The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports. The award distinguishes Ms. Lanier as the nation’s best player in a sport played by approximately 430,000 young women at 15,672 high schools across the nation, according to a press release. In addition to honoring her athletic excellence, the award also recognizes Ms. Lanier’s exemplary academic achievement as well as her overall character.
