Phoenix Sailor serves aboard USS George Washington

Aviation Boatswains Mate Airman Kody Roberts, from Pheonix, stands a security watch aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) as the guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto departs Naval Station Norfolk. George Washington is homeported in Norfolk after serving seven years in Yokosuka, Japan as the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

Phoenix native serves at Naval Submarine Support Center

A 2002 North Canyon High School graduate and Phoenix native is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of Naval Submarine Support Center. Chief Hector Serrano is a yeoman serving aboard the Kings Bay-based submarine support command. A Navy yeoman is responsible for providing administrative and clerical work for eight submarines at naval base Kings Bay. “I like interacting with people around the world who have diverse cultural backgrounds,” said Chief Serrano.

Phoenix sailor named Navy Band’s Sailor of the Year

The U.S. Navy Band has selected a Phoenix native as its 2015 Sailor of the Year. Musician 1st Class Amanda Cline, the band’s productions head, was selected as the top-performing sailor from a pool of 92 first class petty officers. “Petty Officer Cline is not just an outstanding productions head, but she has distinguished herself as support staff leading petty officer, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive chair and heritage committee member,” stated Master Chief Musician Kevin Dines, the command’s senior enlisted leader, in a press release.

Phoenix native keeping seas free in the Middle East

A 1996 Valley Alternative Magnet High School graduate and Phoenix native is helping the U. S. Navy keep sea lanes safe and open in the Middle East, serving on the mine countermeasures ship USS Gladiator (MCM-11). Chief Petty Officer Jose Barraza is a Navy machinist’s mate and lives who works at a Navy base in Manama, Bahrain, where the Gladiator is based. Bahrain is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Arabian Gulf, according to a press releaes. A Navy machinist’s mate is the maintenance manager aboard a ship, the release stated.
