‘Come Together,’ celebrate John Lennon’s birthday at MIM Oct. 8

Celebrate “A Day in the Life” of legendary musician John Lennon at the Musical Instrument Museum on Saturday, Oct. 8. Enjoy this special day with a Curator Talk, a film screening, a MIMQuiz, UK-themed menu items for purchase at Café Allegro, and other activities commemorating Lennon’s legacy of peace and love. Not surprisingly, Mr. Lennon is associated with some of the world’s most valuable musical instruments, including the Steinway upright piano in MIM’s Artist Gallery, according to a press release.

MIM celebrates Father’s Day with special events

Delight Dad on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19, with a day at the Musical Instrument Museum in north Phoenix. Spend the day exploring the galleries, learning drumming basics, and enjoying lunch and drink specials at Café Allegro. Register the whole family for a special drumming workshop led by master instructor Frank Thompson. Learn the basics of African, Latin, and pop-music hand drumming and make music and rhythm together. After basic instruction, the session will end with a jam session.

MIM announces new director of institutional advancement

The Musical Instrument Museum in north Phoenix has announced Melissa M. Santana as its new director of institutional advancement. Ms. Santana brings to MIM more than 20 years of experience in developing fund-raising strategies for institutions in the arts and education.

Music students to take class from concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine

Three students from Rosie’s House: A Music Academy for Children have been selected for a special Master Class to be taught by concert violinist Rachel Barton Pine during the upcoming Musical Instrument Museum exhibition “Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker” on Saturday, Jan. 16. The opportunity for the students, which also includes a field trip to MIM for more than 50 Rosie’s House students and staff to tour the exhibit and participate in an interactive talk with Ms. Pine in the MIM Music Theater, is part of a collaboration among Rosie’s House, MIM and the National Endowment for the Arts, according to a press release. Students participating in the master class from 10:30 a.m. until noon are Marcus Wolf, 15, from Phoenix who plays viola; Tyra Schmidt, 16, from Tempe, who plays violin; and Chelsea Mendoza, 16, from Tempe, who plays cello.

The Legacy of Stradivarius comes to life as never before at the MIM

Opening Jan. 16, as part of its five-year anniversary celebration, the Musical Instrument Museum will bring to Arizona Stradivarius: Origins and Legacy of the Greatest Violin Maker. Violins, an internationally beloved instrument, will be the star of this new exhibition, which showcases 10 exceptional historic and modern examples from the string family, including a 1728 Stradivarius violin on public display for the first time in the United States. On view only at MIM, this one-of-a-kind exhibition introduces the story of how early violin makers from the modest Italian city of Cremona shaped music from the 16th century onward, according to a press release.

Banner Health to host caregiver lecture Nov. 13

Banner Sun Health Research Institute and Banner Alzheimer’s Institute continue free educational lecture series, Giving People Strategies for Caregiving, with a Nov. 13 class titled, ‘Finding Activities that Work in Dementia. BAI experts will discuss simple, affordable and enjoyable activities for people with dementia. Lecture participants also will learn how to create a daily calendar of fun. Space is limited and reservations are required.
