Black, Starr & Frost announces new vice president

Black, Starr & Frost – America’s first jeweler since 1810 – has appointed veteran retail executive Saad Makdesi as vice president/managing director of the company’s new Phoenix salon which opened in October in the Biltmore Plaza Shopping Center. According to Alfredo J. Molina, chairman of Black, Starr & Frost, Mr. Makdesi will oversee Phoenix’s first and only Black Starr & Frost salon, located in his well-known chateau-style building at 32nd Street and Camelback – adjacent to his Molina Fine Jewelers storefront. Mr. Molina acquired the iconic Black, Starr & Frost brand in 2006, and in 2011 opened a salon overlooking the Newport Beach harbor in southern California. He is now focused on expanding the historic company – which at its peak had over 30 locations – into key U.S. markets.

Biltmore beauty bar expands once again

Citrine Natural Beauty Bar has moved to a larger space within Biltmore Fashion Park with its own storefront. Boasting a large line of all-natural beauty products from foundation and mascara to exfoliants and oils, the new 1,400 square foot retail space will accommodate the business’s growing clientele with more product lines as well as makeup and skincare workshops, according to a press release. Owner Melissa Lenberg opened Citrine back in 2012 after working in the beauty industry nearly half her life.

City of Phoenix affordable housing — profits on poor

City built affordable housing is anything but affordable for taxpayers and profits off of the poor. The goal of the program has always been to provide housing for those who are in need. Through the years, however, it became a way to take money from those in need and stripping taxpayers of hard earned monies. For example, across from the Biltmore, the most expensive luxury apartment complex ever sold in the private sector was located at 26th Street and Camelback Road for $277,000 a unit.

Biltmore dentist named Health Care Hero finalist

Dr. John Dougherty of Artistic Dental was recently selected as a finalist among 165 nominees for the Phoenix Business Journal’s 2015 Health Care Heroes Awards. Dr. Dougherty is one of three finalists in the dental category. The Phoenix Business Journal along with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Abrazo Health Care and Delta Dental will present awards and recognize finalists at a breakfast held on Aug. 20 at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. The event open to the public, will recognize the outstanding contributions that healthcare professionals make to the community. “I am honored and overwhelmed to be selected as a finalist among my peers,” Dr. Dougherty stated in a press release.
