3 Phoenix Country Day School seniors are National Merit semifinalists

Three of the 66 members of the Phoenix Country Day School Class of 2017 are semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

The three PCDS semi-finalists are: Annalise Bracher, a PCDS student since first grade, who is an award-winning violinist; Simon Olschansky, who joined PCDS in the seventh grade and a competitive crew athlete; and Aaron Ossias, an accomplished engineering student and creative writer, who has attended PCDS since pre-Kindergarten, according to a press release.

The students earned the designation of semi-finalist after placing in the top 1 percent of testers in last October’s PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and are among the top scorers in the nation, the release said.

As semi-finalists, the chosen PCDS seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of three possible scholarships, including National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored merit scholarships, or college-sponsored merit scholarships.

“We are proud to support the academic and personal growth of all of our students, including Annalise, Aaron, and Simon,” said Headmaster Andrew Rodin in a prepared statement. “Not only are they smart and dedicated students, they have distinguished themselves in the arts, athletics, and as dedicated members of this community.”

Over the past four years, PCDS has graduated 24 total National Merit Semi-Finalists, representing 10 percent of its graduates during that span, according to the release. Since its founding in 1961, PCDS has been recognized by colleges and universities throughout the country for producing high-academic, well-rounded, and especially prepared graduates.
