Instead of its regular club meeting on Wednesday, March 9, members of the Paradise Valley Rotary Club went for a special tour of the studios of Ballet Arizona in Phoenix.

The Rotary Club made a $5,000, five-year commitment to support the company’s New Works Initiative to ensure that Ballet Arizona will perform special works annually at the Desert Botanical Garden through 2020.

Paradise Valley Rotary’s donations will be matched dollar for dollar in a special matching grant program to support dance in the desert.

After an informative presentation by Ballet Arizona staff, Rotarians and their guests were given a behind-the-scenes guided tour of Ballet Arizona’s facility, including dance studios, scenery room and costume room. They also viewed part of a rehearsal and enjoyed lunch in a studio.

The New Works Initiative allows the desert to provide the backdrop for performances of Ballet Arizona, an innovative and provocative professional ballet company that creates, performs, and teaches outstanding classical and contemporary ballet.

Under the artistic direction of Ib Andersen, Ballet Arizona has become an internationally recognized company, praised for its work in such publications as the New York Times.
