Paradise Valley singers join Phoenix Boys Choir on summer tour to Europe

The 32 members of the Phoenix Boys Choir Tour Choir — including three members from the Town of Paradise Valley — depart on a 22-day tour through Spain and Portugal June 5.

This year’s international summer tour takes the boys through Segovia, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Avila, Salamanca, Porto, Seville, Puerto de Santa Maria, Granada, Toledo and Madrid to name a few.

Masters Choir will join the Tour Choir during the final leg of the tour. The Masters Choir consists of boys and men who have graduated from the choir and have continued singing after voice-change.

The Tour Choir, the top choir of the Phoenix Boys Choir, travels on a three- week tour each summer alternating domestic or international. Tours introduce the boys to new cultures, build cultural awareness and enhance self-responsibility.

Not only does the world renowned Tour Choir perform multiple concerts while on tour, the boys immerse themselves in the culture of the region they visit.

Boys will have a chance to visit many points of interest during their 19-city tour, including the San Isidoro Royal Collegiate Church, the historic center of Valladolid, the Alcazar, the Monastery of El Escorial, Old Town Salamanca, Geronimo’s Monastery, the Royal Alcazares, the Alhambra Palace, the Generalife Gardens and the Prado Museum among others.

While on tour, concerts are performed at nearly every city visited by the choir showcasing repertoire of classical and sacred songs, plus special repertoire unique to the tour.

Included in the touring choir, are 12 boys graduating the Choir this year. Graduating boys include:

Founded in 1947, the Phoenix Boys Choir has programs featuring training in voice, music theory, and performance for boys age 7 to 14.  The Phoenix Boys Choir tours nationally and internationally, records CDs and sings with other professional groups and even won a Grammy Award.

The Choir’s recording of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was included in the movie preview of the 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” collector’s edition box set released by Warner Brothers Home Entertainment.

The Tour Choir toured the West Coast with Columbia Artists’ Management of “The Lord of the Rings In Concert: The Fellowship of the Ring” singing alongside the Pacific Chorale and the Munich Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Ludwig Wicki performing Howard Shore’s complete Academy Award® and Grammy® Award-winning score.

The Phoenix Boys Choir’s Artistic Director, Georg Stangelberger was accorded the Decoration of Honour in Gold from the Consul General of Austria in February 2014.
