Brandeis National Committee hosting “Food for Thought” luncheon

The Phoenix Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee will be holding its opening luncheon at 11 a.m. on Oct. 30, at the Camelback Golf Club.

The luncheon’s theme is “Food for Thought.” Former Arizona Republic food critic Howard Seftel will be the featured speaker, according to a press release.

After reviewing Valley restaurants for 23 years, first for the Phoenix New Times and then the Arizona Republic since 1999, Mr. Seftel put down his fork and knife last May, the release stated. A native New Yorker and graduate of Brooklyn College, Mr. Seftel spent five years abroad during the 1970s: three years with the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa, and two years in Iran as a contract employee teaching English to the Shah’s navy.

He returned to the states as the Iranian revolution got underway, doing graduate studies in American and Middle Eastern history at U.C. Berkeley, and later teaching at Antioch University in Los Angeles, stated the release.

He moved to Phoenix in 1990. He is married to former Arizona Republic editorial writer Kathleen Ingley, a fellow Peace Corps Senegal volunteer. They have two daughters, two sons-in-law and three grandsons.

The Phoenix Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee is a voluntary organization which raises funds for the library at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., the release stated.
