Arizona Christian University to award student films at PV mall

The Arizona Christian University will be presenting Firestorm Film Festival, its student festival, on Tuesday, May 19.

Awards will be handed out at The Picture Show inside Paradise Valley Mall, 4568 E, Cactus Road in Phoenix. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

‘With Sugar,’ a short film about technology, relationships, and coffee, picked up six award nominations to lead all nominees at Arizona Christian University’s inaugural Firestorm Film Festival, according to a press release.

The film, written and directed by Senior Communication major Elizabeth Godfrey, earned nominations for best film, best director, and best music as well as three nominations for acting, with nods going to Bailey Shultz, Brandon Palacio and Lilia Cosavalente.

‘The Oasis’ was the second most recognized film, earning five nominations. The road trip film, written and directed by Senior Communication major Kacie McChesney was nominated for best film, best director, and best screenplay. It also earned best actor nods for its twin leads, Christian Van Bebber and Eliot Dudley, according to the release.

Other nominated films include ‘The Time that Passes Us By,’ a marriage drama by Emily Dulas (three nominations: best film, best director, best screenplay), ‘Identity,’ a fantasy film by Lilia Cosavalente (three nominations: best director, best music, and best actor-Jasandra Holmes), ‘Burden,’ a workplace dramedy by Elizabeth Dickerson (two nominations: best music and best screenplay) and ‘The Unforgotten Dream,’ a nostalgic sports drama by Shanie McChesney (one nomination: best screenplay).
