Xavier celebrates its 73rd commencement ceremony, 286 graduates

Xavier College Preparatory held its 73rd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at St. Francis Xavier Church.

The class of 2019 had 286 graduates, 97 of whom earned associate degrees from Rio Salado College while attending Xavier, according to a press release.

Mr. Harry Plummer, executive director of the Division of Education and Evangelization of the Diocese of Phoenix and the Superintendent of Schools, conferred the diplomas, the release said.

Members of the 2019 graduating class earned the following national or state awards of distinction: Flinn Scholar, Caroline Hyland; National Merit Commended Scholars: Gianna Beck, Maria Boby and Renee Pierson; and National Hispanic Scholar: Sonora Rodriguez.

During the ceremony a variety of awards were presented, according to the release.

The highest honor bestowed on a graduating senior, the Regina Caeli Award, was conferred on the following students for exemplary achievement:

Regina Caeli Award for Service, Karina Smith; Regina Caeli Award for Scholarship, Caroline Hyland; and Regina Caeli Award for Leadership, Katherine Thomas. The Women of Achievement Awards to outstanding alumnae were presented to Michelle Ajame Zachar ’83 for outstanding service to the school and Elena Flores-Breese ’00 for outstanding service to the community.
