Two Xavier Prep grads awarded Fulbright student grants

Two recent Xavier College Preparatory graduates have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Melissa Montalvo, an alumna of Xavier’s Class of 2009 and the University of Southern California, has received a grant for an English Teaching Assistantship in Mexico.

Named a Renaissance Scholar and a Global Scholar while at USC, she currently works as a development associate at the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education.  Upon her return from Mexico, she will attend UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

Jenna Smith, an alumna of Xavier’s Class of 2011 and a graduating senior at Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University, has received a grant for an English Teaching Assistantship in South Korea.

Named an Outstanding Graduate of ASU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as a Moeur Award recipient, she will attend the University of Pennsylvania Law School upon her return from South Korea.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in over 160 countries worldwide, and more than 1,900 U.S. citizens will travel abroad for the 2015-2016 academic year through
the Fulbright U.S. Student Program

Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given approximately 360,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
