Tara Dugel, a senior at Phoenix Country Day School, has been recruited for varsity squash at Columbia University in New York City.

Ms. Dugel has committed to Columbia, which is part of NCAA’s Ivy League, and she will matriculate there this fall.

Although popular in the East Coast and outside the USA, squash is a seldom known sport in the Southwest. It has been a challenge for Ms. Dugel to find coaches and training partners.

Additionally, since all the major squash tournaments are in the East Coast, the cross-country travel, time change, and time away from her rigorous academic workload have added to the challenge.

Nonetheless, Ms. Dugel has played at the highest level and remains nationally ranked. She has also excelled in her studies and has been named a Scholar Athlete by US Squash every eligible year.

When asked how Ms. Dugel started playing squash, she replied, “My dad shared his passion for the game with me when I was 7-years-old. I don’t think that my parents thought I would continue to play since there was no one else here to play with. I just loved the game and loved the competition, so I kept playing and got better and better. Columbia has always been my first choice and I am so thrilled to be recruited there.”

Ms. Dugel looks forward to playing on the Varsity Squash Team in Columbia University and to living in New York City this fall.

Editor's Note: Brenna Dugel is Tara Dugel’s sister, and a student at Phoenix Country Day School.
