PCDS Middle School Speech and Debate Team celebrates its 2nd consecutive state title

The Phoenix Country Day School Middle School Speech and Debate Team won the Arizona State Championship this past weekend at a tournament at Chandler Prep. Nearly 300 students, in grades five-through-eight from more than 20 schools across the state, competed for the state title.

PCDS took home the championship for the second consecutive year. They performed well in multiple categories from Model Congress to Extemporaneous Speaking to Duo Interpretation. Along with their team state championship, individual state titles were won by Sam Steiner, Pierce Florey, Olivia Boscardin, Emory Murff, George Nassar, Ethan Lambert, and Hampton Kohler.

This is the second anniversary for the PCDS Middle School Speech & Debate team, as well as its second state title.

“This program, from fifth through twelfth grade, is a force,” said Middle School Speech and Debate Coach Ryan Joyce, noting that the students were mentored by “amazing coaches,” and some of their PCDS Upper School counterparts on the high school state champion speech and debate team. “In my 22 years involved with speech and debate, I have truly never been part of a team as dedicated and determined as this group of fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.”

Next, this group will send selected qualifying competitors to the Speech and Debate National Championship in Salt Lake City in June.
