On Friday, Oct. 23, Phoenix Country Day School celebrated its 48th Annual Blue and Gold homecoming celebration in its newly expanded athletic complex, including the Najafi Gymnasium and Garvin Family Walk of Champions.

Earlier in the week at a special donor event, the Najafi Gymnasium and Garvin Family Walk of Champions were opened as the second of four components of the school’s THRIVE capital campaign.

“This facility will have a transformative impact on all students, from pre-kindergarten through high school, for generations to come.  We embody excellence at PCDS, and will support our students’ academic and extra-curricular growth with the finest facilities, coaches, and teachers in the Valley,” stated Headmaster Andrew Rodin in a press release.

The Najafi Gymnasium adds a much-needed second gym for the school, in order to better balance the PE and after-school sports programs in our Pre-K through 12 school. It highlights the school’s commitment to a balanced academic and co-curricular experience, helping to prevent sports practices late into the night for its Upper School students.

The gym is over 20,000 square feet, seats 850 spectators, features separate home and away locker rooms (including flat screen televisions in the home locker rooms to review game film), and is capped by a 20’ by 30’ projection wall to be used for showing school videos, in-game highlights, and team announcements.

The Garvin Family Walk of Champions serves as the entry to the Upper School, and a promenade between the two PCDS gyms. It features an outdoor performance stage to host events, musical performances, and Alumni Hall of Fame inductions, as well as four trophy cases showcasing the school’s significant academic and extra-curricular achievements, the release stated.

PCDS students were welcomed into the new space during the all-school Blue and Gold Day Pep Rally. Middle and Upper School athletic teams were announced, and the event was highlighted by student relay races, an a capella performance, and tons of PCDS spirit.

That evening, all PCDS community members—including students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni from far and wide—returned to campus for an evening of sporting events, delicious food trucks, a campus carnival, live country music concert, and fireworks extravaganza.

Phoenix Country Day School is a nonprofit, private, independent day school for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. It emphasizes high academics and both extra and co-curricular activities, including academics, arts, and athletics. Generations of alumni often warmly recall many of its traditions and connections across the age levels, especially Blue and Gold Day.
