Sunrise Middle School seventh grader, Nicola Fergusona, won the Regional II Spelling Bee Feb. 18. Nicola advances to the State Spelling Bee to be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 at the Arizona PBS Studios.

In all, 45 students — nine from Paradise Valley Unified School District — participated in the Regional II Spelling Bee, which lasted nine rounds until the winning word was spelled correctly. Nicola’s winning word was “aquiline,” according to a press release.

This is the second year in a row that PVSchools has produced the Regional II Spelling Bee winner.

The winner of the State Spelling Bee will represent Arizona at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., the release stated.
