Xavier College Preparatory has announced that senior Khalia Lanier has been named the 2015-16 Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year by The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports.

The award distinguishes Ms. Lanier as the nation’s best player in a sport played by approximately 430,000 young women at 15,672 high schools across the nation, according to a press release.

In addition to honoring her athletic excellence, the award also recognizes Ms. Lanier’s exemplary academic achievement as well as her overall character.

She has maintained a weighted GPA of 4.21 in the classroom, and she has volunteered on behalf of the Desert Mission Food Bank and an orphanage in South Africa.  She is planning to attend the University of Southern California next fall on a volleyball scholarship.

On Wednesday, Dec. 9, Ms. Lanier was surprised with the award by Olympic sand volleyball silver medalist April Ross, the release stated.
